ISZL runs multiple programmes such as PDWs where students and teachers alike engage in activities which sequester carbon from the atmosphere or implement solutions to potential future emissions. These projects include the Iceland PDW, the Global Himalayas project, our Solar Panel Project, Rocket Stove Project and our electric transport.

EXAMPLE: TREE PLANTING IN ICELAND

Over the past centuries, Iceland has experienced diminishing forests due to human activity and in 2017 the local government pledge to change that. 

Originally initiated as a PDW opportunity for carbon offsets, this student-led project in Iceland involves both planning and carrying out reforestation activities and trail maintenance. Working in collaboration with the Iceland Forestry service, ISZL is supporting tree planting initiatives which serve to directly remove CO₂ from the atmosphere in addition to providing biodiversity and improving the safety of mountain trails, securing soil with tree roots and preventing landslides. Offering one of the most effective, direct methods of carbon sequestration, this tree planting initiative provides individuals and families within the ISZL community with the opportunity to plant the trees equating to their carbon footprint offset. 

“Iceland is environmentally dichotomous in that 100% of its power comes directly out of the earth through boiling hot water, yet simultaneously is almost completely deforested. This offers us a unique opportunity to study both what they are doing well and to help with their reforestation efforts. Trees not only absorb carbon, but they also help to stabilise the fragile earth in Iceland.
